My husband and I were out bush walking when we came across what appeared to be pieces of random blue objects scattered on the forest floor. At first glance I thought it was irresponsible campers who had left behind their litter then we saw the wonderful solid structure made of dried sticks and my husband said this probably was a structure built by a male Bowerbird. Apparently the male bird gathers blue objects and places it around the structure which he has built in order to attract a mate. The structure is called a bower and I can best describe it as a deep U-shape with supports on either side. The blue objects consisted of plastic milk bottle tops, string, feathers, clothes pegs and even advertising material. It was fascinating I had never come across such a sight. It was incredible also to think that the Bowerbird was not colour blind and could clearly distinguish between different colours and could pick out only blue objects.

Bowerbirds make up the bird family Ptilonorhynchidae.
They are renowned for their unique courtship behaviour, where males
build a structure and decorate it with sticks and brightly coloured
objects in an attempt to attract a mate. The bowerbirds have an Austro-Papuan distribution, with ten species endemic to New Guinea, eight endemic to Australia, and two found in both.
Although their distribution is centered on the tropical regions of New
Guinea and northern Australia, some species extend into central,
western, and southeastern Australia. They occupy a range of different
habitats, including rainforest, eucalyptus and acacia forest, and shrub lands. In courtship the male bowerbird will dance to the female in an attempt to attract her.

The most notable characteristic of bowerbirds is their extraordinarily
complex courtship and mating behaviour, where males build a bower to attract mates. There are two main types of bowers. One clade
of bowerbirds build so-called maypole bowers, which are constructed by
placing sticks around a sapling; in some species, these bowers have a
hut-like roof. The other major bowerbuilding clade builds an avenue type-bower made of two walls of vertically placed
sticks. In and around the bower, the male places a variety of brightly
colored objects he has collected. These objects – usually different
among each species – may include hundreds of shells, leaves, flowers,
feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items, coins,
nails, rifle shells, or pieces of glass. The males spend hours arranging
this collection. Bowers within a species share a general form but do
show significant variation, and the collection of objects reflects the
biases of males of each species and its ability to procure items from
the habitat, often stealing them from neighboring bowers. Several
studies of different species have shown that colors of decorations males
use on their bowers match the preferences of females.

It is ANZAC Day today which is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey and in all subsequent wars.

This morning my husband and I attended a dawn service at a local village green in a township closest to us. It was a moving experience to be gathered there in the darkness about half and hour before dawn broke among between 100 to 150 people who had also come to attend the service. A person played a beautiful lament on the bagpipes and the great grandson of an Australian soldier who had served with The Rats of Tobruk gave a poignant speech. After the ceremony the RSL kindly invited all those present to attend a gunfire breakfast if they so wished.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;

They fell with their faces to the foe.

Our tent at a location in the Snowy River National Park

We went away on a camping trip recently in the state of Victoria, in Australia. My husband was keen as mustard but I was quite apprehensive. The Australian bush can be quite intimidating to a novice like me with little camping experience. The thought of spending a couple of nights away out in the countryside in a small two person tent in a remote location with the notorious Australian wildlife filled me with horror and dread but I put on a brave face and went anyway.

I kept on wandering why do people go camping? Is it to satisfy some hunter gatherer instinct? What draws people to leave the comfort of their homes to go out into the countryside or bush as it is called here in Australia to live in a basic way? Do people actually find this an enjoyable past time? I had more questions than answers.

Soon after we drove out of a small country town on the drive to the National Park I noticed that we no longer had mobile telephone coverage. Alarm bells started ringing in my mind. I kept on thinking what if something goes wrong how can we contact people? Then my husband reassured me that although the mobile telephone network says "No Service" in an emergency you could still dial 000 which is the state emergency number and you would be able to speak to an operator who will put you through to the police, fire and ambulance services. In addition, an emergency call can be made using the international emergency call number 112. I found this information very reassuring.

Now that we are back in one piece I can say that I am glad that I went. It has been a character building exercise. I now feel more at ease out in the Australian countryside. The Australian wildlife were certainly there in great numbers after all this is where they live. It was great to see lyre birds, wedge tailed eagles, goannas (which are large monitor lizards), kangaroos and wallabies in their natural habitat rather than in a zoo. I came to realise that these animals are very elusive and when they hear a car approaching on a dusty, remote track all they want to do is run or fly away. They are not out to get us. With this comforting thought I felt more at ease and was able to enjoy our camping trip.

I think people go away camping for different reasons perhaps it helps them to clear their minds, to escape the big smoke, to be at one with nature, to see new places. As for me, I agreed to go camping with my husband to test myself to see if I could do it, to preserve my survival instinct.

It was interesting to note that although we were no longer at home our days were still structured around traveling to a camp site, setting up camp, preparing an evening meal, washing the dishes, preparing for and then going to bed. Maintaining a routine was helpful.

We were only away for two nights but now that we are back we are already planning for our next camping trip.

Members of the order are found in all continents except Antartica, but they are most abundant in the tropics and subtropics. They are herbivorous with many species living unobtrusively in the tree canopy. They have a hemimetabolous life cycle with three stages: eggs, nymphs and adults. Many phasmids are parthenogenic,
and do not require fertilised eggs for female offspring to be produced.
In hotter climates, they may breed all year round; in more temperate
regions, the females lay eggs in the autumn before dying, and the new
generation hatches out in the spring. Some species have wings and can
disperse by flying, while others are more restricted.

Ecology
Phasmids are herbivorous, feeding mostly on the leaves of trees and shrubs, and a conspicuous component of many neotropical (South American) systems. Phasmatodea have been postulated as dominant light-gap
herbivores there. Their role in the forest ecosystem is considered
important by many scientists, who stress the significance of light gaps
in maintaining succession and resilience in climax forests.
The presence of phasmids lowers the net production of early
successional plants by consuming them and then enriches the soil by defecation. This enables the late succession plants to become established and encourages the recycling of the tropical forest.

Phasmatodea are recognized as injurious to forest and shade trees by defoliation. Didymuria violescens, Podacanthus wilkinsoni and Ctenomorphodes tessulatus in Australia, Diapheromera femorata in North America and Graeffea crouani in coconut plantations in the South Pacific all occur in outbreaks of economic importance. Indeed, in the American South, as well as in Michigan and Wisconsin, the walking stick is a significant problem in parks and recreation sites where it consumes the foliage of oaks and hardwoods. Severe outbreaks of the walking stick, Diapheromera femorata, have occurred in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The insects eat the entire leaf blade. In the event of heavy outbreaks, entire stands of trees can be completely ravaged.
Continuous defoliation over several years often results in the death of
the tree. Fortunately for control efforts, because the insects cannot
fly, infestations are typically contained to a radius of a few hundred
yards. Nevertheless, the damage incurred to parks in the region is often
costly. Control efforts in the case of infestations have typically
involved chemical pesticides; ground fires are effective at killing eggs but have obvious disadvantages. In New South Wales, research has been done into the feasibility of controlling stick insects using natural enemies such as parasitic wasps (Myrmecomimesis spp.).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phasmatodea

It is interesting how some scientists view the Phasmatodea's "role in the forest ecosystem as important" whilst others point out that they can be "injurious to forest and shade trees by defoliation". I suppose it is all about maintaining environmental equilibrium. In small numbers they probably fulfill and important role however in large numbers they may well be viewed as a pest.

Australia is such a vast country/continent and I think the best way to explore it is by going camping. A company called Conqueror Australia have fantastic off-road trailers but they are understandably very pricey. I wanted to do a blog post about these trailers because they are Made in Australia and in the event that we win the lottery we will definitely buy a UEV490 model. In the meantime, camping is still fun with a tent and sleeping bags. The Conqueror website says, "All the canvas used in the Conqueror UEV490 is military stock, UV stabilised and mildew resistant and fully submerged in waterproofing solution rather than just having it sprayed on."

Still on the subject of camping, I have taken two great books out on loan from the library to inspire my husband and I to cook up some great meals on our next camping trip. They are full of easy meals as well as tips on what to take with you.

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia.
Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788
arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson. New South
Wales and the raising of the flag of Great Britain at at Sydney Cove by
Governor Arthur Phillip.
In present-day Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and
landscape of the nation and are marked by community and family events,
reflections on Australian history, official community awards and
citizenship ceremonies welcoming new members of the Australian
community.

In contemporary Australia, the holiday is marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on Australia Day Eve, announcement of the Australia Day Honours list and addresses from the Governor-General and the Prime Minister. It is an official public holiday in every state and territory
of Australia, unless it falls on a weekend, in which case the following
Monday becomes a public holiday instead. With community festivals,
concerts and citizenship ceremonies, the day is celebrated in large and
small communities and cities around the nation. Australia Day has become
the biggest annual civic event in Australia.

My husband and I went by car to the country town of Sale in the state of Victoria yesterday. Whilst we were walking around the city I spotted a brightly coloured upright piano placed near the clock tower ready to be used by the general public. A little girl aged about four was having a go pressing the different keys and enjoying the sound they made and her mother was taking her photograph. After they went it was my turn. I learnt how to play the piano at the age of 11 whilst at boarding school in England. At school we were encouraged to take part in piano examinations organised by the Royal Schools of Music. I took part and passed piano examinations for grades 1, 2 and 3. My upright piano is currently in storage and I have not had the opportunity to play the piano since July 2002. So it was wonderful to be able to sit down and play some of the classical pieces I learnt by heart all those years ago. I played the piano for about half and hour and some passersby were happy to stop and listen to me whilst others were kind enough to give me words of encouragement such as, "you are doing well" and "what a beautiful piece". My husband kindly made a short video so that I could include it in my blog post.

Community pianos, pop up pianos which are located in the public sphere are a fantastic idea and a great initiative. I wish they were more readily accessible by the general public in greater numbers across other towns and cities. They enable people to actively engage with a musical instrument and get hands on experience (pardon the pun). This may in turn lead to more people wanting to have piano lessons or learn how to play another musical instrument.

Playing the Pop Up Piano in the country town of Sale inspired me to do some research on this subject. On the Internet I came across a website set up by the Melbourne Piano School http://www.melbournepiano.com.au/pianos-in-melbourne.html I was pleased to learn that they are currently creating a map of pianos in public spaces in Melbourne and their website also gives details about the piano I played in Regional Victoria in the country town of Sale. The Melbourne Piano School website also asks visitors to their website to inform them of any other community piano/pop up piano that they are aware of which has not yet been added to the list.

The year is yours. What will you do with it?

I saw this philosophical question on a notice board today and it really made me think about all the things which I would like to achieve in 2018. I always make New Year's Resolutions anyway however I found this question more confronting it is as if they are challenging you to use the year ahead wisely. For my part I would like to do the following;

- do some voluntary work and give my time and skills to help others

- take driving lessons and get an Australian driver's license

- increase my chances of finding suitable paid employment by doing further training at a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) College. There is a great website called Ethical Jobs http://www.ethicaljobs.com.au/ I am most interested in jobs which are advertised here and hopefully I can use my Honours degree in Social Sciences as well as my language skills and a booster course at TAFE will enable me to fulfill this resolution.

- After watching several episodes of The Great British Bake Off, I have been inspired to apply to the Antipodean version of this program, The Great Australian Bake Off. I'm pretty confident with my baking skills and I reckon I have an interesting back story. Besides as with anything in life, you need to participate in order to challenge yourself and improve your existing skills and abilities. https://www.lifestyle.com.au/bakeoff/

Happy New Year to you all, I hope you too will be inspired to set yourself some realistic goals.

Cricket is a bat and ball game played between two teams of eleven players each on a cricket field,
at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch with a
target called the wicket (a set of three wooden stumps upon which two
bails sit) at each end. Each phase of play is called an innings during
which one team bats, attempting to score as many runs as possible,
whilst their opponents field.
Depending on the type of match, the teams have one or two innings
apiece and, when the first innings ends, the teams swap roles for the
next innings. Except in matches which result in a draw, the winning team
is the one that scores the most runs, including any extras gained.

I was recently introduced to this humorous, heartwarming song which is sung so skillfully here by John Williamson. I love the up-beat tune and the lyrics are so funny. One gets a real appreciation for Australia and all things Australian just by listening to it although people who have never set foot in this beautiful island, country, continent may need some help understanding the meaning behind the jargon in the lyrics. The wonderful lyrics are co-written by Bob Brown and Wally Johnson.

I've seen the sights, I've had delights

On every foreign shore

But when my mates all ask me

The place that I adore

So, here is a key explaining some of the jargon in the lyrics so that everyone who listens to this song will be able to understand it. I have provided some of the definitions myself and others such as the name of Australian fauna are definitions from the internet.

Give Me a Home Among the (or Home Among the Gum trees)
is a popular Australian song written in 1974 by Wally Johnson and Bob
Brown (aka Captain Rock). It was originally performed as a satirical
number in Johnson and Brown's comedy act at the Flying Trapeze Cafe in
Fitzroy, Melbourne and was first recorded in 1975 on the Captain Rock album Buried Treasure on Mushroom Records. At that time the Australian Government had decided to scrap God Save the Queen as the national anthem and was running a contest called the Australian National Anthem Quest to find a replacement. The Gum trees song was Johnson and Brown's response (it did not win).

In 1982, the bush band Bullamakanka
reputedly found a copy of the Captain Rock album in a music shop sale
bin (although this story is not confirmed by all members of the band).
They recorded a cover version of Gum trees, which then became a hit. The song was later recorded by popular Australian country music singer-songwriter John Williamson,
thus increasing its popularity (many mistakenly believe Williamson to
be the original composer). Bullamakanka made some changes to the lyrics,
which were also retained in Williamson's recording. These tended to
water down the original tongue-in-cheek nature of the song. This song has become one of the most frequently recorded Australian
compositions of all time and is a standard in Australian folk music.

The front cover image is apparently a "male in the Jumping Spider genus Maratus, the Peacock Spiders, which belong to the most spectacularly coloured spiders in Australia. Maratus speciosus is known from sand dune habitats in south-west Western Australia."

I borrowed this excellent, comprehensive tome from the library following an unexpected encounter indoors with a large (approximately 10cm in diameter) Huntsman Spider which is in the family Sparassidae at 01:30 in the morning. Even though I have a great respect and fascination for spiders however, seeing a huge specimen at this time of the morning very near me almost caused me to have an acute myocardial infarction brought on by fear. It was large, dark and hirsute as one would expect. My husband urged me to get a glass and a sheet of paper or cardboard and he then put the glass over the spider which was difficult because the Huntsman was so large it almost did not fit inside the glass and slipped the piece of paper between the glass and the wall and was able to carry the Huntsman outside and release it.

Reading the chapter on the Sparassidae on page 266, I learnt that "Huntsman Spiders are generally large spiders with a more or less flat body and a crab-like ('laterigrade') arrangement of the legs. In addition to two tarsal claws, they have dense pads of hairs on the ends of their legs, which allow them easily to climb any vertical surface. They may even be seen scuttling on the ceiling." The chapter also mentioned that the Huntsman Spiders were active at night and did not need a web to capture their prey instead relying on their ability to run extremely fast and thus chase and capture their prey. Apparently, "Despite their large size, Huntsman Spiders are not known to inflict a serious bite on humans. They often show very aggressive behaviour when disturbed and bites are relatively frequent, for example when people pick up logs under which they hide, or if they cause stress to a spider that was hiding in washing on the clothes line. Effects are local, including puncture marks and minor bleeding, with associated pain which only last for a short time. Systemic effects are very rare but may include nausea and headache."

Finding out information about the Huntsman has helped me. This is not to say that I will not jump out of my skin if I have another close encounter with one. At least it is comforting to know that they are not venomous.

Vegemite, as well as being a quintessentially Australian breakfast spread is also an acquired taste. I have not yet "acquired" a taste for it. I think it is one of those foods which you either love or hate.

As well, it is worth mentioning that Men at Work, the Australian rock band from the 1980's who became known around the world for their 1981 hit single "Down Under" included their beloved Vegemite in the lyrics of their song.

"Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, "do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich."

So, for anyone who did not understand the meaning of the lyrics, a Vegemite sandwich, is a savoury food which is spread onto buttered toast and typically eaten at breakfast.

Vegemite is a thick, black Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It was developed by Cyril Percy Callister in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922. The Vegemite brand was owned by Mondelez International but was acquired by the Australian Bega Cheese group following an agreement in January 2017.

A spread for sandwiches, toast, crumpets and cracker biscuits as well as a filling for pastries, Vegemite is similar to British, New Zealand and South African Marmite, Australian Promite, MightyMite, AussieMite, OzEmite and Swiss Cenovis. Vegemite is salty, slightly bitter, malty and rich in umami – a glutamate similar in flavour to beef bouillon.

The Melbourne Cup is a prestigious international Thoroughbred horse race which takes place at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia every year on the first Tuesday in November. The race was first run in 1861 when there were two organising committees controlling the horse racing in Victoria, the Victorian Turf Club (1852) and the Victorian Jockeys Club (1857). It is the richest "two-mile" handicap
in the world, and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at
3pm on the first Tuesday in November and is known locally as "the race
that stops a nation".

Qualifying and race conditions

The race is a quality handicap for horses 3 years old and over, run
over a distance of 3,200 metres, on the first Tuesday in November at
Flemington Racecourse. The minimum handicap weight is 50 kg. There is no
maximum weight, but the top allocated weight must not be less than
57 kg. The weight allocated to each horse is declared by the VRC
Handicapper in early September. The Melbourne Cup race is a handicap contest in which the weight of the jockey
and riding gear is adjusted with ballast to a nominated figure. Older
horses carry more weight than younger ones, and weights are adjusted
further according to the horse's previous results. Weights were theoretically calculated to give each horse an equal
winning chance in the past, but in recent years the rules were adjusted
to a "quality handicap" formula where superior horses are given less
severe weight penalties than under pure handicap rules.

Fees

Entries for the Melbourne Cup usually close during the first week of
August. The initial entry fee is $600 per horse. Around 300 to 400
horses are nominated each year, but the final field is limited to 24
starters. Following the allocation of weights, the owner of each horse
must on four occasions before the race in November, declare the horse as
an acceptor and pay a fee. First acceptance is $960, second acceptance
is $1,450 and third acceptance is $2,420. The final acceptance fee, on
the Saturday prior to the race, is $45,375. Should a horse be balloted
out of the final field, the final declaration fee is refunded.

Quarantine

International horses (New Zealand not included) that are entered for the
Melbourne Cup must undergo quarantine in an approved premises in their
own country for a minimum period of 14 days before traveling to
Australia. The premises must meet the Australian Government Standards.

Prize Money

My husband and I are now ensconced in Australia which seems a world away from Tel Aviv, Israel in so many ways. In distance alone it is a mind boggling 13,759 Kilometers away which is 8549.11 Miles. Then there are other factors which are worth noting such as the time difference. Melbourne, Australia is +9 hours ahead of Tel Aviv, Israel. I suppose one of the most prominent differences are the seasons. As Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, it is currently Spring here whereas in Israel it is Autumn. Then there are other differences such flora and fauna. One other difference for us is that throughout our various overseas postings we have always lived in major cities whereas here we are living in the countryside. In the coming days and weeks I will gradually get back into blogging again on a regular basis.

Getting back to the Melbourne Cup, I placed a bet for the first time in my life for $5 on a horse called Johannes Vermeer, hoping it would win but it came in 2nd place. Having said that, I am not disappointed as it was thrilling to watch the race on television. I will hopefully have better luck next year. What amused me was that due to the race it was apparently a public holiday in Melbourne. I have never lived in a country before which has a partial public holiday in a particular city in honour of a long standing horse race. Oh well, as they say there is a first time for everything. I am very much looking forward to living here in the state of Victoria in Australia.

Carob is the name of an evergreen tree native to the Middle East which has the Latin name Ceratonia siliqua. Carob is also the name of the dark brown nutritious fruit which can be eaten as a tasty snack and is also used by vegans as a substitute to chocolate. It is high in dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and iron. It contains no cholesterol. Interestingly, the etymology of the word carat which denotes a unit of weight has its origins in the seeds of the carob tree as the seeds are all uniform and are the same shape and size.

Cappadocia is a semi-arid region in central Turkey known for its spectacular cone shaped rock formations as well as churches and dwellings carved into the rock by early Christian settlers and its underground cities. It received international recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1985. It is said that the geological rock formations of this eerie landscape were formed when three mountains namely Erciyes, Hasan and Melendiz which used to be active volcanoes erupted and scattered layers of volcanic ash and mud some thirty million years ago. The peaks of these mountains which are now extinct volcanoes still dominate this area. The rock formations are made of compressed volcanic ash otherwise known as tuff. This area is now a popular tourist destination and is frequented by hikers, mountain bike riders, people wishing to go on a hot air balloon ride as well as Christians who wish to visit the ancient rock churches. It is also of special interest to geologists and volcanologists.

Our time in Tel Aviv has come to an end after almost three years. I have enjoyed living here and I leave with good memories and a heavy heart. Who knows, I may return again one day? In the meantime, there is nothing left for me to say except להתראות it sounds less final than goodbye. I chose this photograph because even though I will be in another country it is comforting to know that we share the same sky. I will continue with my blog but until we are settled again in another country my blog posts will be intermittent.

It's strange. Sometimes as an expatriate you live in a place for a while and only in the last couple of months prior to your departure you discover a great restaurant. This was the case with Orna and Ella. A real gem of a restaurant located in Shenkin Street with a loyal clientele. It has such a wonderful atmosphere and best of all the food is delicious. Here is a brief extract from their website: "Orna and Ella, is a contemporary yet time-honored culinary institution
in Tel Aviv, existing since 1992. What started as a modest Cafe on
Sheinkin Street, has become a highly regarded bistro with a versatile
and unique menu. Orna and Ella's kitchen combines homemade food, along
with gourmet cuisine."

Ever since I first discovered this shop it has been a favourite of mine. The shop keepers are so helpful and friendly and the historical black and white photographs of Tel Aviv are absolutely fantastic. They have a wonderful selection of posters and postcards here. As the informative leaflet says, "Pri-Or Photo House is an archive shop holding photographs, books, postcards and gifts of old Tel Aviv and Israel. Established in 1940, Pri-Or Photo House ("Zalmania") is the oldest photography shop in Israel. It has been family owned and operated for 3 generations. It has become one of Israel's most important and largest photography archives, containing over one million negatives ...".

Last month when I was walking up Allenby Street, the window display of a shop at number 93 caught my eye and I went in. The clothes were very well made using only natural fabrics like cotton and linen. The shop assistant was very helpful and enthusiastic and kindly explained to me that the brand of clothing sold at this shop was originally established in 1934. The clothes were designed and manufactured in Israel and were a source of great national pride. The brand name ATA was synonymous with quality. Their clothing is fashionable, practical and comfortable. As well, the fact that it is made of natural fibers is an added bonus as it helps to keep your body cool in the hot and humid summer temperatures. The informative card above says, "Recently, we decided that it was time for ATA's revival and we launched two stores in the heart of Tel Aviv.

The definition of what kosher means is multifaceted. Prior to coming to live as an expatriate in Israel, I was under the impression that the word Kosher implied only to meat and the way it was slaughtered. Having had the opportunity to live here since December 2014 I now have a better understanding of the word Kosher and its implications with regards to food. Having said that, what can be defined as kosher or not is rather complex and I would suggest people who are interested in finding more about this subject to carry out their own research.

Kosher, adjective (of food or premises in which food is sold, cooked or eaten) satisfying the requirements of Jewish law.

Kosher foods are those that conform to the regulations of kashrut (Jewish dietary law). Food that may be consumed according to halakha (Jewish law) is termed kosher in English, from the Ashkenazi pronunciation of the Hebrew term kashér (<span class="script-hebrew" dir="rtl" style="font-family: "alef" , "sbl biblit" , "sbl hebrew" , "david clm" , "frenk ruehl clm" , "hadasim clm" , "cardo" , "shofar" , "david" , "ezra sil" , "ezra sil sr" , "noto sans hebrew" , "freeserif" , "times new roman" , "freesans" , "arial"; font-size: 115%;">כָּשֵׁר), meaning "fit" (in this context, fit for consumption). Food that is not in accordance with Jewish law is called treif Yiddish: טרײף, derived from Hebrew: טְרֵפָה trāfáh) meaning "torn."
This is the reverse side of a British rail ticket. As you can see there is an advert by the Samaritans which is a registered British charity with the aim of helping people when they are going through a particularly difficult time. They may be feeling lonely, helpless, worthless and as if no-one cares. When you are going through tough times like these, it is important to remember that the best thing you can do is to reach out to the people around you. You will realise that people do care and are willing to listen to you and try to help you. All you have to do is to let them know how you are feeling.

One could say that the term street art is just a glorified name for graffiti and perhaps that is the case but then again we are all entitled to our own opinions. I wanted to do a blog post about this subject as there is a lot of street art here in Tel Aviv and some of it is rather good. A few of the examples of graffiti/street art is of a political nature and I will not include these here. It may be said that Banksy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy the anonymous England based graffiti artist, political activist has had a huge impact and elevated this rather dubious art form into dizzying heights. To this effect, this form of graffiti/street art appears to have become more widely acceptable.
