Esparto grass

Esparto grass is used by Tunisian craftsmen to make hand-made doormats and baskets.  It is a very coarse, hardy natural fibre able to withstand daily wear and tear.  The doormats are very well made.  I will do a separate blog post about baskets made from Esparto grass.

These mats made from Esparto grass can be purchased in some tourist areas.
"Esparto, or esparto grass, also known as "halfah (alpha/alfa) grass" or "needle grass", Macrochloa tenacissima and Stipa tenacissima, is a perennial grass grown in northwest Africa and the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula employed for crafts (cords, baskets, espadrilles, etc)."
